Cockburn Dragon Boat Club began life as a corporate team in 1985, drawing its members from the staff of the Cockburn City Council and locals from the Cockburn area (located south of Fremantle). Early success saw paddler numbers quickly grow and soon Cockburn was fielding an Open, Women’s and Mixed Crews.
Cockburn built its first Fremantle Class Dragon Boat, the “Spirit of Cockburn” in late 1987. Continued expansion saw the need to store it’s growing fleet of boats and a move to a new base at East Fremantle Yacht Club on the SwanRiver was made and this is where we continue to paddle today.
The club currently has two fibre glass (IDBF Standard) Boats as well as one OC6 Outrigger, which is typically used over winter. We also have a number of aluminium boats for use.
Cockburn Dragon Boat Club has tasted success at club state and national levels winning the Open Final at the 1996 nationals, and also a 2 Bronze and 1 Silver in the Open Master’s Finals at the 2007 Nationals in Penrith thus being invited to compete in the 2008 World Club Crew Championships to be held in Penang.
We field in teams in the Open, Women’s, Masters, Mixed and social/corporate categories. We are also the birth place of the Amazons Team, a team of Breast Cancer Survivors and supporters who compete locally, nationally and also internationally. Cockburn now also has its own Breast Cancer Survivors crew called the Diamonds.
Dragon Boating is a fun, social sport catering for all different levels of fitness and ability. If you are interested in training hard, being an integral; part of a team and winning then our open, women’s or mixed team is what you are after. If you are over 40 you may qualify for our Master’s Crew, a great bunch of people. However if you are more interested in having just a fun paddle, with less intense training demands, our Cockburn Knights team might be what you are after.
CDBC is a socially active club. During the season, we usually hold BBQ’s after training on Thursdays. Fundraising is also a very important part of the club and helps us attain new equipment and also repair the existing lot. |
