DIAMONDS SPARKLE WITH LIFE

WHO ARE WE
We are a group of Breast Cancer Survivors and Supporters (friends or family) celebrating life after cancer.

OUR AIMS
Our aim to offer support, fun, fitness and friendship whilst promoting Breast Cancer Awareness.

We offer friendship and support help to improve self-confidence and esteem after the side effects and stress of cancer treatment.

We encourage exercise to assist the recovery and maintenance of physical and psychological well being, following the diagnosis and treatments.

We promote Breast Cancer Awareness through our involvement with Breast Screen WA, the cancer council of WA and the Breast Cancer Foundation of WA.

We aim to be actively paddling in bright pink tops, a bright sign there is life after Cancer and it’s up to us to make the most of it.

WHY DRAGON BOATING
In 1996, Dr Don McKenzie of Vancouver Canada proved that Dragon Boating was an ideal sport for Breast Cancer survivors, which was contrary to popular opinion of that time.

He found the repetitive upper body exercise helped prevent lymphoedema (swelling caused by accumulation of excess lymphatic fluid in the arm) that frequently developed after Breast Cancer surgery.

He also found that the greater muscle strength, increased muscle flexibility and fitness improved the overall wellbeing of Breast Cancer survivors.

Paddling has proven to be an excellent upper body exercise following breast surgery and even whilst continuing treatment.

You must seek medical advice from your medical team before you come and try dragon boating.

IT’S EASY TO GET INVOLVED
  • You do not have to be an elite athlete. Age and fitness are not an issue.
  • We welcome everyone, participation and enjoying an active life after cancer is the focus.
  • Along the way we are making new friends, have support, and most importantly we are gaining strength whilst exercising.
